Pro-Democracy Uprisings

Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak fled the country, stepping down from office. He had ruled Egypt for more than 30 years and he had strong support from the U.S. even though his regime accorded few basic freedoms.

Tunisian dictator Zine el-Abidine Ben Ali had to leave the power because pro-democracy protesters effectively shut down much of the country.

Governments in Bahrain, Iran, Libya, Yemen, and Algeria have used force against protesters. In Libya, fighting has erupted between pro-government forces and rebels.

A doctor who treated protestors in the city of Hodeidah (Yemen), said hundreds of armed security forces and police personnel who wore civilian clothes attacked the demonstrators. Yemeni minister resigns over handling of protests.

How should the international community handle situations like the one in Libya, which threatens to break into the kind of violence that could result in thousands of deaths? Should other countries become involved?
