Commenting on what the confrontation between East and West might produce in the lives of the Individuals Albert Hourani writes:
Those educated in Western schools became aware of new ideas and norms; they became conscious that the West was judging them in the light of those norms and as the movement of Western learning grew they began to judge themselves in the same way.
